Recommended Posts

After months of teasing us with viral tweets and behind-the-scenes pictures, the first official images from Godzilla: King of the Monsters have arrived. The movie is the sequel to 2014's blockbuster Godzilla and it will see the legendary monster take on a host of other giant creatures from the classic Japanese Godzilla movies.

The images come via Entertainment Weekly. In the first we can see Godzilla himself, standing in the ocean, launching some spectacular fiery breath into the air. The second reveals two of the new cast members--Vera Farmiga (The Conjuring), who plays monster hunter Dr. Emma Russell, and Stranger Things' breakout star Millie Bobbie Brown, as her daughter Madison. Check them out below.

Godzilla: King of the Monsters will be third movie in the so-called MonsterVerse, following Godzilla and last year's Kong: Skull Island. The movie also stars Kyle Chandler (Game Night), Bradley Whitford (Get Out), Thomas Middleditch (Silicon Valley), Sally Hawkins (The Shape of Water), and Charles Dance (Game of Thrones.) It's directed by Michael Dougherty, whose previous credits include the Christmas monster movie Krampus, and hits theaters on May 31, 2019,

In an interview with EW, Dougherty revealed a few more plot details about the movie, which picks up five years after Godzilla. "The world is reacting to Godzilla in the same way we would react to any other terrifying incident, in that we are overreacting," he said, "There's paranoia and endless speculation about whether [Godzilla] is the only one out there or whether we're threatened by others like his kind."

The director also hinted at what we can expect from some of the other monsters, which will include Mothra, Rodan, and his ultimate nemesis, the three-headed King Ghidorah. "Rodan's been kind of a sidekick character, but I've always had a soft spot for him" he said. "In a lot of ways he's more powerful than Godzilla. He's like this winged A-bomb. I think we've done him justice."

The fourth movie in the MonsterVerse will be Godzilla vs Kong, which is currently scheduled for a 2020 release. Last year, director Adam Wingard spoke about the movie and explained that he hoped to match the monster mayhem with emotional drama. "It's a massive monster brawl movie," he said. "There's lots of monsters going crazy on each other, but at the end of the day I want there to be an emotional drive to it. I really want you to take those characters seriously. I want you to be emotionally invested, not just in the human characters, but actually in the monsters."
